When should I use Data Matrix instead of a QR code?

When space is extremely tight, or when your industry mandates it. Data Matrix is denser than QR for small payloads. QR is the better pick when consumers scan with phones, since phone apps recognise QR more universally.

Is this suitable for the Falsified Medicines Directive?

Data Matrix is the correct symbology, but FMD compliance also requires GS1 Application Identifier data structure and numbers registered to you. Check the exact requirements with GS1 and your packaging supplier.

How small can I print it?

It depends on your printer and scanner. For laser-printed labels 8 to 10 mm is common; direct part marking can go smaller but needs specialised scanning equipment.

Data Matrix

Data Matrix packs a lot of data into a very small square, down to a few millimetres. That makes it the standard for marking electronic components, surgical instruments and medicine packaging. In the EU, Data Matrix is mandatory on prescription medicines under the Falsified Medicines Directive.
